Initial Expectations for the A2 Coursework

What I Expected To Be Challenging

Starting my A2 coursework, I have a clear sense of what I expect from the production process, the challenges I may face, and the skills I hope to develop by the end of the project. Having completed my AS film opening, I now understand the workflow of media production more realistically, and I am entering A2 with both confidence and caution. This project is more advanced, requires independent decision-making, and demands a stronger balance between creativity and technical accuracy.

What I Think Will Be Challenging

One of my main expectations is that A2 will be more demanding in terms of complexity and workload. A music video requires a much higher level of coordination compared to a film opening because it involves synchronising visuals tightly with music, maintaining performance continuity, and creating a consistent aesthetic across the entire video.

I expect challenges in:

  • Time management, as filming multiple scenes for a music video can be unpredictable.
  • Maintaining visual consistency, especially with lighting, costume, and makeup across different days.
  • Directing performance, which is different from directing acting in a narrative film.
  • Sync editing, which requires precision and patience.
  • I also anticipate that planning will need to be more detailed because music videos have faster pacing, more transitions, and more varied shot types.
What I Think Will Be Manageable
  • I expect certain aspects to be more manageable because of my AS experience. For example:   Research and analysis feel easier now since I know how to identify conventions and explain them academically.
  • Storyboarding and shot listing are areas I understand well, so I can create stronger pre-production documents.
  • Basic editing workflows such as organising clips, cutting, and adjusting audio are skills I already developed.
  • Mise-en-scene planning should also be easier because I now understand how props, lighting, and costume influence the tone of a scene.
  • These strengths give me a foundation that will help me handle the A2 tasks with more direction and confidence.

Skills I Expect to Develop Further

A2 expects students to work at a more advanced level, so I’m entering the coursework knowing that I must push my skills beyond what I did in AS. I expect to improve in:

  • Advanced editing techniques, especially synchronicity, rhythm, and visual effects.
  • Cinematography, including camera movement, dynamic framing, and more thoughtful composition.
  • Lighting setups, learning how to create a specific mood or atmosphere intentionally.
  • Audio-visual coordination, ensuring the movement, performance, and cuts all align with the beat and emotion of the song.
  • Creative direction, especially in terms of building an aesthetic that makes the video visually memorable.
  • I see this project as an opportunity to mature as a media producer and develop a more professional approach.
My Mindset at the Start of A2

As I begin my A2 coursework, my mindset is more realistic and disciplined compared to AS. I know that strong media production is not about random creativity; it requires strategy, organisation, experimentation, and reflection.

I am entering this project with:

  • A willingness to explore new techniques
  • A commitment to planning thoroughly
  • Openness to re-shooting or changing ideas when needed
  • A focus on quality rather than quantity
  • The determination to produce something that genuinely reflects growth

I expect A2 to be challenging, but I also see it as an opportunity to refine my style, think more like a professional filmmaker, and push myself beyond my comfort zone.
