Creative Visual and Concept Development

One of my strongest abilities as a Media Studies student is my capacity to develop creative ideas and transform them into clear, structured concepts. During my AS coursework, I learned how to take an abstract idea and turn it into a visual narrative with purpose and meaning. This has strengthened my confidence in brainstorming concepts for my A2 music video. I am able to imagine not only the visual direction but also the emotional tone, pacing, and thematic elements that will shape the final product. This creative clarity helps me stay focused from the early planning stages through to production.

Strong Understanding of Technical Production Skills

My experience with AS media introduced me to key technical skills that now form the foundation of my A2 work. I am comfortable using a camera, understanding framing, composition, and basic cinematography principles. I also have a solid grasp on editing workflows, which allows me to make decisions based on how different shots will transition and connect. Because of this past experience, I enter A2 with technical confidence, which reduces hesitation and allows me to approach production with more control and precision.

Effective Use of Sound and Audio Elements

While making my AS film opening, one of the strengths I discovered in myself was my attention to sound design. I noticed that I naturally understood how music and sound effects could influence mood, tension, and atmosphere. This gave me a deeper appreciation for the emotional role of audio in media. Since a music video relies heavily on sound and rhythm, this becomes one of my biggest advantages. I already know how to synchronize audio with visuals and how to use sound to enhance the overall narrative impact.

 Strong Planning and Organizational Skills

I have learned how important structure is in media production. Managing schedules, shot lists, storyboards, and equipment is something I now approach methodically. Instead of rushing into filming, I have developed the discipline to plan thoroughly before production. This is a strength that will help me avoid unnecessary delays, confusion, or repeated reshoots. It also ensures that I enter the production stage with clarity and confidence, knowing each step is strategically mapped out.

 Ability to Reflect and Improve from Previous Work

One of the most valuable strengths I carry into A2 is my ability to evaluate my own work honestly. After completing my AS film opening, I recognized what worked well and which areas needed improvement. This reflective mindset helps me approach the A2 project with maturity. I am not afraid to identify weaknesses, seek feedback, and make necessary adjustments. My willingness to learn from past mistakes makes me stronger creatively, technically, and professionally.

Commitment, Consistency, and Work Ethic

Media production requires patience and discipline, and I have proven to myself that I can maintain both. Throughout AS, I consistently worked on my blog, carried out research, completed practical tasks, and kept track of deadlines. This commitment directly strengthens my A2 work. My ability to stay focused, manage my time, and put genuine effort into every stage of production gives me the stability I need to deliver a strong final product.

Growing Confidence in Storytelling and Visual Expression

As I progress in Media Studies, I have become more aware of my ability to express ideas visually. I understand how camera movements, color, performance, and mise-en-scene contribute to storytelling. This growing confidence lets me take more creative risks in my A2 project, experimenting with new styles and visual techniques. It allows me to go beyond basic filming and build a narrative experience that matches the emotional tone of the music video.

During pre-production, exploring different storyboard options and shot ideas was an essential step to ensure that each scene effectively conveys emotion, symbolism, and narrative flow. Rather than immediately settling on a final storyboard, I experimented with alternative compositions, camera angles, and visual perspectives to determine the most impactful way to present the story. For the initial exploration, I sketched multiple variations of key shots, focusing on how framing, distance, and camera movement influence the viewer’s emotional experience. For example, I experimented with placing the character off-centre in some sketches to emphasise isolation, while in other sketches I tested symmetrical framing to create balance and calmness in certain reflective scenes. Filming Challenges & Contingency Planning

As part of my pre-production process, I considered potential challenges that may arise during filming and developed contingency plans to ensure the project can continue smoothly. Since the music video includes both indoor and outdoor locations, careful preparation is necessary to manage environmental and technical risks. One major challenge is outdoor lighting conditions. Natural light changes quickly, especially during sunset and evening scenes. If lighting becomes inconsistent, it may affect continuity between shots. To manage this, I plan to film outdoor scenes within a controlled time window and prioritise essential shots first.
