Emotional and interpretive music videos usually focus less on telling a clear story and more on expressing internal feelings through visuals. Instead of using fast-paced editing or strong performance elements, they rely on mood, atmosphere, and subtle symbolism. This genre often uses slow pacing, minimal locations, and intimate camera work to allow the audience to emotionally connect with the character. The purpose is not to explain everything directly but to let viewers interpret meaning through visuals, facial expressions, and setting. This suits Everything I Wanted because the song itself is reflective and deeply emotional, so a loud or overly dramatic style would weaken its impact. An interpretive approach allows the video to feel personal and immersive rather than forced or artificial.
One of the strongest conventions of this genre is the use of close-up shots and limited movement. These shots create emotional intimacy and make the audience focus on the character’s expressions. In emotional music videos, the face becomes the main storytelling tool. A good example of this can be seen in Adele’s Hello, where the camera frequently lingers on her expressions, allowing the emotion to lead the narrative rather than action. This proves that emotional engagement does not require complex scenes, only strong visual focus on feeling.
Another convention is the use of empty or quiet spaces that visually represent isolation and introspection. Emotional and interpretive music videos often avoid busy backgrounds because they distract from the mood. Instead, simple rooms, empty streets, or minimal environments are used to strengthen emotional atmosphere. This technique is visible in the film Blue Valentine (2010), where empty spaces and soft lighting reflect emotional distance and vulnerability. This shows how location choice itself can become part of emotional storytelling without dialogue or explanation.
Through this research, I learned that emotional and interpretive music videos depend on simplicity, subtlety, and atmosphere. The focus is not on showing events but on showing feelings. These conventions guide my project by encouraging me to use intimate framing, calm pacing, and minimal environments to communicate emotion visually. This makes my music video feel aligned with professional media practices and suitable for the emotional tone of Everything I Wanted.
