My Chosen Genre and the Reason Behind It

 What My Chosen Genre Is

Main Genre: Emotional & Psychological Music Video

Sub-genre: Narrative-driven and Interpretive

For my A2 coursework, I have chosen to produce an emotional and psychological music video. This genre focuses on portraying inner thoughts, feelings, and mental states rather than relying on action-heavy scenes or external events. I selected this genre because the song Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish explores themes such as emotional vulnerability, fear, isolation, and the importance of support during difficult moments. These ideas are best communicated through expressive visuals, symbolism, and character-focused storytelling rather than fast pacing or performance-based visuals.

This genre allows me to visually represent emotions that are often invisible, such as anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional pressure. Instead of explaining these feelings through dialogue, I plan to show them through cinematography, facial expressions, body language, lighting, and setting. This approach helps create a deeper emotional connection between the audience and the character, which matches the slow tempo and reflective tone of the song.

I have also chosen a narrative-driven and interpretive style within this genre. A narrative structure will help me present a clear emotional journey, showing how the character moves through moments of distress and support. At the same time, the interpretive approach gives me creative freedom to use metaphorical scenes and symbolic imagery to reflect the lyrics and mood of the song rather than following a literal storyline.

Overall, this genre suits both the message of the song and my creative strengths, particularly in working with atmosphere, sound, and emotional storytelling. It allows me to produce a meaningful and visually engaging music video that communicates psychological depth while remaining realistic and relatable to the audience.
