Weaknesses I Want to Improve Throughout A2
Directing Performance
Recognising weaknesses is an important part of developing as a media producer. While my AS experience helped me build a strong foundation, it also made me aware of areas where my skills are still developing. Going into A2, I am consciously identifying these weaknesses so I can address them through planning, practice, and reflection during the music video production process.
Advanced Editing Techniques
Although I developed basic editing skills during AS, I am aware that my ability is still limited when it comes to advanced editing techniques. Music videos require fast pacing, rhythmic cutting, and smooth transitions that match the beat of the song. At AS level, my editing was more functional than stylistic.
In A2, I want to improve:
- Beat-based cutting and precise synchronization
- Use of creative transitions without overusing effects
- Visual rhythm and flow
- Advanced colour correction and grading
Camera Movement and Cinematography
During AS, most of my shots were static or minimally moving. While this worked for a film opening, a music video demands dynamic camera movement. I recognise that I need more confidence in:
- Tracking and panning shots
- Handheld movement without shakiness
- Planning camera movement alongside performance
- Creating visually interesting compositions during motion
A2 gives me the opportunity to experiment with movement while maintaining control and purpose.
Lighting Control and Consistency
Lighting is an area I find challenging, especially when filming in different locations or at different times of the day. In AS, I relied heavily on natural light, which limited my control over mood and atmosphere.
For A2, I want to improve:
- Creating consistent lighting across scenes
- Using lighting to reflect emotion and tone
- Avoiding overexposed or underexposed footage
- Understanding how lighting affects colour and texture
Strengthening this skill will help my visuals feel intentional rather than accidental.
Directing Performance with Confidence
One of my personal challenges is directing performers confidently. While I understand what I want visually, communicating that clearly to someone in front of the camera can be difficult. Music videos rely heavily on expression, movement, and energy, which means performance direction is essential.
I want to improve my ability to:
- Give clear instructions
- Help performers feel comfortable on camera
- Maintain consistent expressions and body language
- Guide lip-syncing accuracy
Developing this skill will significantly improve the emotional impact of my music video.
Managing Perfectionism and Time Pressure
At times, I struggle with perfectionism, which can slow down my workflow. While attention to detail is important, overthinking decisions can lead to unnecessary delays.
During A2, I want to:
- Make confident decisions more quickly
- Balance quality with efficiency
- Set realistic deadlines and stick to them
- Avoid last-minute stress
Learning to manage time more effectively will improve both my productivity and creative process.
Taking Creative Risks
Although I am comfortable with safe, structured ideas, I sometimes hesitate to take creative risks. A2 is an opportunity to push beyond predictable choices and explore more original visual approaches.
I want to challenge myself to:
- Experiment with unconventional shots
- Try new editing styles
- Explore symbolic visuals
- Develop a stronger personal style
Taking controlled risks will help my work stand out and show growth from AS.
Conclusion
The weaknesses I have identified are not limitations but areas for improvement. By acknowledging them early, I can approach my A2 coursework with intention and focus. Improving these skills will allow me to grow as a media producer and produce a final music video that reflects both technical progress and creative confidence.
