My initial concept is to create a narrative-driven and interpretive music video that focuses entirely on internal emotion rather than external action. After closely listening to Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish, I realised that the song does not demand dramatic storytelling or complex events. Instead, it communicates vulnerability, emotional pressure, and quiet intensity. Because of this, I want my music video to show an emotional journey through visuals such as expression, space, lighting, and framing rather than dialogue or physical action. The concept is built around the idea that emotions can be communicated more powerfully through stillness and subtle movement than through loud or exaggerated performance.
The structure of my video will be narrative-driven because the character will go through an emotional progression from heaviness and pressure to a calmer, more grounded state by the end. However, it is interpretive because I will not represent the lyrics literally. Instead of showing exact actions described in the song, I will translate the emotional meaning of the lyrics into visuals. This approach is widely used in professional music videos, especially in emotionally focused productions. For example, in Billie Eilish’s When the Party’s Over, the video does not show a literal story from the lyrics but relies on facial expression, controlled movement, and minimal space to communicate emotion. Similarly, in Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khalid, the confined glass box symbolises emotional pressure and isolation rather than showing a real-life situation. These examples show that emotional storytelling can be symbolic and visually restrained while still being powerful.

Another important part of my concept is focusing on internal emotion instead of physical action. The song feels personal and reflective, so using slow movement, subtle facial expressions, and limited locations makes the emotion feel more real and relatable. Emotional music videos often remove unnecessary visual noise so the audience can fully concentrate on the character’s mental state. This research helped me understand that simplicity strengthens emotional impact. When there are fewer distractions in a frame, the audience is more likely to connect with the emotional experience of the character.
The visual mood of my concept is dark, quiet, and atmospheric. I plan to use low-key lighting with soft glow sources to create emotional depth and seriousness. In cinematography, low-key lighting is commonly used to express vulnerability, introspection, and emotional tension. Dark environments combined with controlled light on the face create a feeling of intimacy and honesty. This lighting style matches the tone of Everything I Wanted, which feels heavy but gentle at the same time. Instead of bright colours or high exposure, I want muted tones that support the emotional weight of the song.

Minimalism is a deliberate creative choice in my initial concept. I plan to use a single main character, limited locations, simple costumes, and controlled movement. This is not due to lack of ideas but because minimalism allows emotional meaning to become stronger. Many professional music videos that focus on emotion choose simplicity to avoid visual distraction. Billie Eilish’s visual style frequently uses plain settings and neutral clothing to ensure the audience focuses on expression and mood rather than spectacle. This research confirmed that minimalism supports authenticity and emotional realism.
The intended emotional impact of my music video is to make the audience feel connected to the character’s internal experience rather than entertained by visual action. I want viewers to feel calm, reflective, and emotionally aware while watching the video. The aim is to create a quiet emotional connection where the audience feels like they are witnessing a private moment rather than watching a staged performance. This approach fits the tone of the song and strengthens its emotional message.
This initial concept shows that my project is built on research, emotional understanding, and visual intention rather than randomness. Every creative decision is motivated by the song’s emotional nature and supported by real examples from professional music videos. By focusing on interpretive storytelling, controlled lighting, minimalism, and emotional progression, my concept forms a strong and professional foundation for the rest of my production process.
