Influence of Media Inspirations

In developing my music video, I drew heavily from various professional media texts that influenced both my visual style and narrative approach. Instead of replicating them, I analysed how these texts use cinematography, lighting, and symbolic imagery to convey emotion, which helped me make informed creative decisions for my project. For example, in the music video Youth by Daughter, the use of wide, desolate landscapes paired with minimal movement creates a sense of isolation and introspection. This inspired me to use long shots with negative space in my own video to evoke emotional vulnerability, showing that a character’s surroundings can reflect their internal state without any dialogue.

Another major influence was the short film The Silent Child (2017), which uses subtle facial expressions, framing, and lighting to portray a young girl’s internal experience and isolation. The way the camera lingers on her eyes or her small gestures communicates volumes without words. This reinforced my decision to focus on micro-expressions and body language to represent emotion in my main character, demonstrating that small visual details can effectively carry the emotional narrative of a project.

By studying these media inspirations, I learned that effective emotional storytelling does not rely on elaborate sets or dramatic plots. Instead, careful attention to framing, lighting, symbolism, and subtle performance can create a professional and emotionally engaging video. These influences helped me shape my approach, ensuring that my music video remains interpretive, narrative-driven, and visually cohesive while maintaining a strong emotional impact.
