Prelimnary Post1-Shot Selection and Analysis

Selecting Unique and Interesting Shots from Media Texts

Purpose of the Exercise

This exercise explores how interesting, creative shots build visual storytelling and emotional meaning. I selected examples of unique shots from The Writing’s On the Wall music video by OK Go a piece known for its inventive camera movement and composition. This will help me choose unique shots for my own music video planning.
For this exercise, I used a short clip from OK Go – The Writing’s On the Wall an official YouTube video that uses creative optical illusion setups and continuous camera movement to create interesting visual effects.
These shots are unique because:
From this exercise, I learned that interesting shots don’t come from randomness they come from planned camera movement and visual concept. In my own music video, I want to create shots that:

Description of Selected Shots

  • Single-take illusion sequence: The camera moves through multiple creatively arranged illusion stations without cutting. This makes the shot visually engaging and shows how movement and perspective can be used to surprise the audience.
  • Optical illusion reveal: When the objects align to form shapes only at a specific camera point, it shows the importance of planning camera movement with visual design.

Why I Chose These Shots

  • They use in-camera illusions, not post-effects.

  • They show movement and perspective in a way that directly influences audience perception.

  • They demonstrate how a single take can still feel dynamic and exploratory.

What I Learned and How It Will Help My Music Video

  • Make the viewer feel calm yet introspective, reflecting the emotional depth of Everything I Wanted

  • Combine close composition with movement to evoke meaning

  • Use perspective shifts to reveal emotional change

I’ll use this analysis as a reference when I create my shot list and storyboard.
