Prelimnary Post3- Lighting and Mood Practice

Exploring Dark Tone and Mood Through Lighting

Purpose of the Exercise

This exercise focuses on how lighting affects emotional atmosphere. Because my music video theme is introspective and emotional, I want dark, low-key lighting that supports this tone. I examined examples and explained how dark lighting supports mood.

Lighting Inspiration Examples

Here are two YouTube videos that explain moody, dark lighting setups ideal for dramatic scenes:

  •  Dark and Moody Studio Lighting Breakdown

shows how to light a scene with controlled, dramatic contrast.

  • Dark and Moody Lighting Techniques

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIFmr95Vsrc&utm
explains how shadows and light placement enhance mood.
    In both videos, lighting is:

    Description of Lighting Style

    • Low exposure with emphasis on shadows

    • Controlled directional light rather than full bright lighting

    • Designed to create emotional depth like sadness, introspection, or tension

This aligns with my music’s mood, which needs dark but visible emotion.

Why This Lighting Style Will Be Used

    Dark, low-key lighting helps:

    • Emphasise emotional expressions

    • Create mood without unnecessary brightness

    • Make visual storytelling feel cinematic and atmospheric

By examining these lighting examples, I can plan how to light my own indoor scenes when shooting.

    What I Learned

Lighting isn’t just brightness it controls mood.
Dark lighting with glow or single source light can:

    • Highlight face expression

    • Create emotional tension

    • Add depth to otherwise simple indoor shots

I’ll use these ideas when I plan my lighting setup for actual filming.
