Purpose of the Exercise
The purpose of this exercise was to understand the emotional structure of the song Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish before applying any visuals to it. Instead of immediately thinking about shots or editing, I focused on analysing how the song develops emotionally and musically. This helped me realise that a successful music video depends on how well the visuals follow the emotional rhythm of the song. Without understanding the song deeply, any visuals added would feel random and disconnected
Breaking the Song into Emotional Sections
I divided the song into clear sections such as the introduction, verses, chorus, and ending. Each part carries a slightly different emotional tone. The introduction feels quiet and fragile, setting a reflective atmosphere. The verses feel introspective and personal, while the chorus becomes emotionally heavier and more intense. Towards the end, the song softens again, creating a sense of emotional grounding. This showed me that a music video should not remain visually the same throughout; it must change subtly as the song changes.
Understanding Emotional Progression
Through this exercise, I learned that music is not emotionally flat. It moves, builds, and releases emotion. These emotional shifts are what should guide decisions such as when to use close-ups, when to slow down editing, or when to hold a still shot for longer. I understood that stronger moments in the song require stronger visual focus, while calmer parts benefit from simplicity and space.
Relationship Between Sound and Visual Storytelling
This exercise helped me understand that sound is the foundation of a music video’s meaning. The visuals exist to support the music, not overpower it. The pace of the song determines how fast or slow the shots should be. The softness of the vocals suggests gentle visuals, while emotionally heavier parts suggest closer framing or darker lighting. This connection between audio and visual elements is essential in professional music video production.
What I Learned From This Exercise
I learned that planning a music video is not just about choosing shots or editing styles; it begins with listening. Understanding the song deeply allows the visuals to feel intentional and emotionally accurate. This exercise made me more aware of how important emotional timing is in visual storytelling. It taught me to respect the structure of the music and let it guide every creative decision.
How This Will Influence My Final Music Video
In my final music video, I will use the emotional structure of Everything I Wanted as the backbone of my visual planning. Shot lengths, lighting choices, camera movement, and editing rhythm will be designed to follow the emotional shifts in the song. This will help my video feel cohesive, professional, and emotionally authentic rather than visually random.
This exercise was valuable because it changed how I think about music videos. I no longer see them as just visuals with music in the background. I now understand that music controls the narrative, emotion, and pacing, and the visuals must serve that structure.
