Colour Palette & Lighting Planning

The colour palette and lighting style of my music video are carefully planned to reinforce the emotional tone of Everything I Wanted. Since the song expresses vulnerability, introspection, and emotional pressure, I chose a muted and neutral colour scheme rather than bright or saturated colours. The dominant tones will include soft greys, off-whites, beige, and darker shades such as muted blue or charcoal. These colours create a calm and serious atmosphere, allowing the audience to focus on emotion rather than distraction.

Muted colours are often associated with realism and subtlety. Bright colours can create energy, excitement, or positivity, which would contradict the reflective mood of the song. By limiting the colour range, the visuals will feel controlled and emotionally heavy. This supports the interpretive style of the video, where mood and atmosphere communicate meaning more than action or dialogue. The restricted palette also ensures visual consistency across scenes, preventing the video from feeling fragmented.

In terms of lighting, I have chosen a low-key lighting style. This means softer illumination, natural shadows, and minimal high-intensity light sources. Low-key lighting is commonly used in emotional and dramatic media because shadows can symbolise internal struggle or isolation. Instead of evenly lighting the entire space, I will allow parts of the frame to remain darker, creating depth and visual contrast. This enhances intimacy and directs attention toward facial expressions and subtle movement.

Overall, the combination of muted colours and low-key lighting strengthens the emotional atmosphere of the video and ensures that the visuals remain aligned with the song’s introspective tone.

Filming Challenges & Contingency Planning

As part of my pre-production process, I considered potential challenges that may arise during filming and developed contingency plans to ensure the project can continue smoothly. Since the music video includes both indoor and outdoor locations, careful preparation is necessary to manage environmental and technical risks. One major challenge is outdoor lighting conditions. Natural light changes quickly, especially during sunset and evening scenes. If lighting becomes inconsistent, it may affect continuity between shots.
