Directing & Working with Actor
During the production of my music video, directing the actor was an essential part of achieving the intended emotional tone. Since the video relies on subtle expression and body language rather than dialogue, I focused on guiding the actor through small, controlled actions rather than dramatic performance.
Before filming each scene, I explained the purpose of the shot and the emotion behind it. Instead of giving complex instructions, I kept directions simple and specific, such as slowing down movements, holding certain positions, and maintaining a neutral or restrained expression. This helped ensure that the performance remained consistent with the overall mood of the video.
A key aspect of my direction was controlling pacing and movement. I encouraged the actor to move slowly and deliberately, allowing each action to feel heavy and intentional. This was especially important in scenes where the character is alone, as the lack of dialogue meant that meaning had to be conveyed through physical presence and timing.
I also focused on body language rather than facial expression, as the character’s face is not fully revealed in many shots. Small details such as posture, hand movement, and stillness were used to communicate emotion. For example, moments of pause and hesitation were used to suggest internal conflict without the need for exaggerated acting.
Throughout the shoot, I provided feedback after each take and made adjustments where necessary. In some cases, scenes were repeated multiple times to refine timing, positioning, and overall performance. This allowed me to gradually improve each shot and ensure it aligned with my storyboard and visual plan.
Communication was an important part of the process. I made sure the actor understood what was required in each scene and felt comfortable performing the actions. This helped maintain a smooth workflow and reduced confusion during filming.
Overall, directing the actor involved a balance between clear instruction and flexibility. By focusing on subtle performance and controlled movement, I was able to achieve a consistent and effective portrayal that supports the emotional and symbolic nature of the music video.
