Symbolism and meaning in final concept

In my final music video concept, I have used a range of symbolic elements to communicate meaning in a subtle and interpretive way, rather than relying on direct narrative or dialogue. This approach allows the audience to engage with the visuals emotionally and form their own understanding of the character’s internal state.

One of the most significant symbols used in the video is the candle. The candle represents the character’s life, emotional warmth, and remaining sense of humanity. Its flickering flame suggests instability and vulnerability, reflecting the character’s fragile mental state. In the final scene, when the candle is extinguished, it symbolically represents the loss of hope or the end of his emotional journey, rather than explicitly showing any action.

Another important element is the use of costume, particularly the formal suit worn by the character. This represents the identity he has constructed or been forced into over time. The suit appears structured and controlled, but it contrasts with his internal emotional instability, suggesting a divide between outward appearance and inner reality.

The mirror is used as a symbol of self-reflection and identity. When the character looks into the mirror, it represents his attempt to confront himself and understand who he has become. However, the framing avoids fully revealing his face, reinforcing the idea that his identity is unclear or fragmented.

The inclusion of masks in the visual design further develops the theme of identity. These masks symbolise the different roles, actions, or versions of the character that he carries from his past. Their presence in the scene suggests that he is surrounded by these identities and unable to fully escape them.

Lighting also plays a symbolic role throughout the video. The use of cold tones represents emotional detachment, loneliness, and the weight of the character’s past, while warm light appears briefly to symbolise moments of awareness or remaining humanity. The contrast between these lighting styles visually represents his internal conflict

The water element is used to suggest emotional depth, cleansing, and possible escape. It reflects the character’s psychological state and his struggle between continuing to live with his past or letting go of it.

Additionally, the use of fragmented memory sequences represents the character’s past experiences. These are intentionally presented in a disjointed and stylised way to reflect how memories are not always clear or linear, but instead appear as flashes that contribute to his emotional burden.

Overall, these symbolic elements work together to communicate the central themes of identity, regret, and internal conflict. By using visual symbolism instead of explicit storytelling, the music video maintains a consistent emotional tone and aligns with the interpretive style of the song.
