Visual style and cinematography approach

In my music video, I have adopted a cinematic visual style that focuses on mood, atmosphere, and emotional expression rather than fast-paced action. The overall approach is minimal, controlled, and visually consistent, allowing the audience to focus on the internal state of the character.

One of the key stylistic choices is the use of low-key and chiaroscuro lighting. This involves strong contrasts between light and shadow, where only certain parts of the frame are illuminated while the rest remains dark. This technique helps to create a sense of mystery and concealment, reflecting the character’s fragmented identity and emotional isolation. In many shots, the character’s face is only partially visible, which reinforces the idea that his true self is hidden or unclear.

The cinematography also makes use of a restricted colour palette. Cold tones such as blue and grey are used throughout most of the video to represent detachment, loneliness, and the weight of the past. In contrast, warm lighting appears in specific moments to symbolise reflection and remaining humanity. This contrast between warm and cold tones visually supports the emotional journey of the character.

In terms of camera work, I have chosen to use mostly static shots and controlled movements. Instead of using fast or complex camera motion, the camera remains steady to create a calm but heavy atmosphere. Movement is introduced through the character’s actions within the frame rather than the camera itself. This approach ensures that the focus remains on subtle expressions and symbolic details.

A variety of shot types are used to enhance meaning. Close-up shots are used to highlight small details such as hands, objects, and facial features, allowing the audience to connect with the character’s emotional state. Wide shots are used to show the character alone within large or empty spaces, emphasising isolation and distance. The use of negative space within the frame further reinforces the absence of others and the character’s sense of loneliness.

Framing is also carefully controlled throughout the video. The character is often positioned off-centre or partially obscured, which visually represents imbalance and internal conflict. The composition of each shot is designed to feel intentional and minimal, avoiding unnecessary distractions.

Finally, the overall pacing of the cinematography is slow and deliberate. Shots are held for longer durations, allowing the audience to absorb the visual information and emotional tone. This slower rhythm aligns with the style of the song and supports the interpretive nature of the music video.

Overall, my visual style and cinematography approach work together to create a consistent and emotionally driven aesthetic that reflects the themes of identity, regret, and internal struggle.
